Natalia Lenzendorf works with the tension between craft and design. She questions the aura and the functional aspects of classical and modern shapes . In this context she leaves it to the observer to interpret the function of her objects or to see them without a function. Skilled in traditional manufacturing processes, the designer also evaluates new technologies such as Rapid Prototyping or the production of objects using 3D-modelling and 3D-printing. The University of Art and Design in Halle has provided the location and tools she needs for these endeavors. Natalia Lenzendorf came to the „Spielraum“ well prepared, bringing her own moulds, with the intention of combining these with other forms. The pool of designs from the Triptis factory would serve as a source of inspiration. Her intention was to use forms inspired by nature, in order to transform vessels, so that the functional aspects are no longer important . The bowls from the group „Flora“, whose shapes come from the production line and are normally used in the serving and presentation of meals, have been transformed by Natalia Lenzendorf into optically and haptically attractive blossom cups. In her „Fire Corals“ she attached tubes from her own moulds to transform the pieces. The now convex instead of concave basic shape has a completely different effect on us. Questioning and surrendering functionality is celebrated in the two series, „Landscapes“ and „Terra“. Small tins form the bases for the first series. They are combined with castings of twigs which are found in nature and which serve as handles (when container can be opened). Arranged together, they become a landscape. This type of unified picture also occurs in the group of bowls titled „Terra“.
